Update: The Equifax Breach
As part of our ongoing efforts to keep our clients informed about issues that may affect them, we are providing an update about the Equifax cyber attack that occurred last month.
Previously we shared that Equifax Inc., one of the affiliates we use to help us process credit applications, announced that hackers had gained unauthorized access to its files in a massive cyber attack. Equifax has since hired the forensic security firm Mandiant to investigate the breach.
While the vast majority of the clients that were affected reside in the U.S., there was a small portion of Canadian clients affected by this breach. Equifax originally reported that approximately 100,000 Canadian clients were impacted however Mandiant has found that only about 8,000 were affected.
Equifax has reviewed the information provided by Mandiant and have begun to mail notification letters to impacted consumers.
These letters outline the information that may have been compromised and provide an offer to enroll in complimentary credit monitoring and identity theft protection services. You can find more details on the Equifax website.
